The Table
We came tonight to the table. The table. It really is an amazing thing. For thousands of years my people have come to it. Since Exodus. They came and were grateful for being delivered from slavery in Egypt. They looked forward through it to the coming Messiah. I can't imagine the wide eyed look in the disciples eyes as Jesus held the bread up, broke it and said, "This is my body" and in the same way the cup, "This is the new covenant, my blood shed for you."
They knew the tradition, the story, and here He was. Then He said, "Do this in memory of me." Not just as a memorial, because as Calvin says, "A mystery happens at the table". But to be changed now and to celebrate the future of change that only God can bring. So we come to the table. It is the heart of the heart of the gospel. We are saying, "I am still here. I am still part of the family. I still want to belong, I still want to believe." And for me, I want to have the future change that only God can bring. So I come.
