City of God

I did a bit of preparation tonight for a class I am teaching on church history. I reflected a bit on the great work by Augustine "City of God." In it, Augustine makes the case that not only were the Christians not responsible for the sack of Rome, but that all historical events must be viewed through the lens of the Christian worldview. Christianity interprets the world. The world does not interpret (through science, reason, logic etc) Christianity.

I think that is a good thought to remember. God does not defend his existance. He is. And His decree and plan will be carried out for His glory. Far better for us to interpret the world and our lives through His lens, not our own. In order to get there I think I need to be in the book, in the books, in prayer and in thought.

I also need to not get drawn in to looking at the world through my glasses or the ones the world would have me put on. It is so tempting to have my point of view. Better to learn His and see reality, not something that is a figment of my imagination. I encourage you this week to think a bit perhaps about going deep in the classics. Augustine, Jerome, Owen, Edwards etc. They seem to have the view of God in their writings. Hard to digest, but worth the work. Blessings
