Ecology as Worship

My beautiful wife re-cycles.

Now at one time I thought I should be able to make money from my cans and paper. After all the re-cyclers are re-selling aren’t they? So why shouldn’t I get some money? I watched the Seinfeld episode where Kramer and Newman try to take returnable bottles across state lines. Then I figured out it was only pennies for two truck loads. So I “never minded.”

“Just throw it in the trash can and let the garbage men pick it up” was my new motto. But, Dorothy has plastic bags and piles in the garage. And when I try and slip something into the garbage she reminds me that it is recyclable. Once in a while she loads up the car and uses our gasoline to go re-cycle. She just gives it to them. Not for money, (in fact it costs us in gasoline, wear and tear etc) but, because it is the Christian thing to do.

I am thinking if we want to worship well we can do better in the area of environment and ecology. Starting with me. Drive a higher gas mileage car, conserve water, re-cycle and encourage others to do the same. In the 70's it was a new "cool" thing. We seem to have moved on. I wonder if 100 years from now Christians will look back on us and say, “How could they not have seen it was morally wrong to not take better care of the environment?” I hope not. I hope we will lead at least in the easy parts of this area, like re-cycling.
