Baxter

I had the pleasure of leading a devotional time tonight for a group of worshippers. I shared from a work by Richard Baxter on "How to spend a day with God" It is worth you checking out on the web.

What struck me was the fact that he started the "day" with sleep. He said we should get enough but not too much. More importantnly he said we should wake up with the thought that other people spent the night in hell, or jail, or a cold dark places...and to reflect on the fact that some people woke up this morning and met their Maker. Then we should realize our last day is quickly coming. Wow. Powerful thinking. I am moved to consider that as I wake up tomorrow.

He goes on to talk about not wasting the day, repenting, redeeming the time we have and loving other people. I concluded our devotional time by saying that we (I) can not really live up to Baxter's "high ideal". But neither can I say, "O well, guess the Holy Spirit needs to move in me or else"

I have to strive and ask the Holy Spirit to do a work too. I have to press on and work out my salvation. I have to pray and meditate, and I have to get some sleep.
